Memorial University of Newfoundland is officially accredited by the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, Newfoundland & Labrador to grant master’s degrees.
Memorial University of Newfoundland was initially established in 1925 at a campus on Parade Street in St. John’s as Memorial University College(MUC) in the memory of the Newfoundlanders who had lost their lives on active service during the First World War. Memorial University of Newfoundland initially operated as a teacher training institute and its first class started with an enrollment of only 55 students.
Today, Memorial University of Newfoundland has grown exponentially from a small teacher training institute to a comprehensive university offering over 100 study routes in wide range of disciplines. Memorial University of Newfoundland enrolls about 14,400 undergraduate students and 3,500 graduate students annually of which about 2,744 are international students representing 119 countries. The university has numerous notable alumnus which include academics and scholars, successful businessmen, known politicians, journalists, comedians, musicians, and many more.
